A club night that'll push the indie floor fillers instead of the doof doof? In Melbourne? We've put together a little something for this week as we highlight the best the avant-pop pixie Grimes and Banks!
When Grimes broke through with her third studio record Visions, it's claimed it was on the back of a brilliantly tortuous process that included living with black windows and insomnia with the hope to induce hallucinations. What came from it was a critically acclaimed, richly textured, hook heavy and inventive electro-pop release with two banger singles in "Genesis" and "Oblivion". Breaking away with a new sound on single "Go", she may have divided a couple fans though if that's what it took to lead into last years Art Angel Lp then who cares!? What a gem of a record!!!
So in the other corner we've lined up the dark RnB killer in BANKS! Whether she's touring with the The Weeknd, performing on the late night TV circuit, or just writing generally dope twisted bangers, we love this chick. A star product of the Soundcloud generation, her first two EP's set the scene for what would be a dominant debut record in Goddess. It spawned four dope singles in "Warm Water", "Brain", "Drowning", and "Beggin' for Thread" that made her a major drawcard on festival bills globally such as Coachella, Bonnaroo and Open'er and Laneway Fest'. It wasn't just us here downunder who loved the release as it charted in the top 20 in several countries with audiences simply embracing the edge she had brought to pop. We're pretty pumped for when second record The Altar drops on September 30th; if lead single "F#$% with Myself" and the absolute banger "Gemini Feed" are anythung to go by! "Gemini Feed" getting a fair work out on the YY's dance floor lately.
"Flesh Without Blood" absolutely pumps out of our recently updated sound system! Oh and to save any confusion that we have surprisingly experienced with some of our previous "vs" party's (which have been dope!), neither of these festival headliner acts will be playing live in our Smith Street located dive bar. Yep.
Yah Yah's, a quality venue, in the Fitzroy area.
