What a Drag delves into the history of drag in Melbourne, tracing its roots from the seedy underground scene of the 1960’s through to the sparkling disco 70’s, the vibrant 80’s and chronicles the impact of the AIDS epidemic and ensuing political crisis and includes the flair of the 90’s, and what drag is today.
Produced and curated by Ricky Beirao (also known as his drag alter ego, Rhubarb Rouge) Beirao, originally from Brazil, moved to Melbourne after performing for years in New Zealand before discovering the unique and fabulous Melbourne drag community. Inspired by real-life stories, Beirao embarked on this project, developing an exhibition to capture the spirit and history of Melbourne Drag. Now in conjunction with Midsumma Festival, Beirao presents this special retrospective to a wider audience.
This multimedia exhibition draws on research from the Gay and Lesbian Archives, as well as interviews with some of Melbourne’s premier Drag icons including: Doug Lucas, Rita LeCoqeater, Kerrie Le Gore and Philma Box.
